Birkbeck Scribblers Event 28.11.12

Our first event for the year was held at The Plough on Museum Street.  We had the superb Narayani L. Guibarra compering for the evening.  We also had Committee members Ines Almedia and Chris Simpson co-running the event and taking photos.

The lure of alcohol and an evening of strong writing from a long-list of great submissions meant that we were full to capacity.  We had a strong response to the feedback forms.  If you filled them out then thank you for doing so.  These have been passed on to the writers.

Our readers for the evening Rob Stevens, Federica Lugaresi, Tarquin Landseer, Alex Bailey-Dumetz, Kirsten McLaughlin, Narayani L. Guibarra and Rebecca Rouillard all come from the BA Creative Writing Course at Birkbeck.  They gave readings of fiction and poetry that ranged from humorous speculative fiction to dark lyrical poetry.  All the work was well recieved from the audience of friends, fellow students and supportive tutors.
Our guest of the evening, writer, tutor and Costa Book Award nominee Benjamin Wood gave a funny and intimate reading from his novel "The Bellwether Revivals".
The evening ended with a prize draw with winners being determined from the feedback forms.  You see, it makes sense to fill them out!
The Committee would like to thank all those who attended and read at the evening for making it work so well.  We would also like to remind you that Narayani L. Guibarra and Ines Almeida are stepping down to focus on their third year studies.  They have been absolutely pivotal to making this and past events a success.  We would therefore like to take this opportunity to remind you that if you would like to take part in organising future Birkbeck Scribblers events then please contact us at:

2nd May Scribblings

Our third event was held for the second time at the Hoop & Grapes and we were all up for a fun and sociable evening.

The room gradually filled pretty much to capacity and the audience geared up by chatting to one another and, when the readings began, by arming themselves with pens poised over feedback forms.  The lure of the prize draw and the desire to help fellow writers could not be resisted.

Our readers, Nydia Hetherington, Narayani L Guibarra, Steven Sobolewski, Eleonora Fusco, Alisa Grafton, Bryony Cooper were from the Higher Certificate and Creative Writing BA courses years 1 and 2.  They gave readings of poetry and fiction ranging from the short story to a novel extract.  The audience were appreciative and supportive and ranged from reader’s friends to fellow students to enthusiastic tutors.

Narayani was back on duty as compere and introduced the readers and encouraged the audience with apparent ease.

Sian Shaw wore the photographer’s hat and captured the ambience of the room with accomplished ease.

The collection bag was practically fit to bursting with over 50 feedback forms.  So thank you to all who participated.

Our main guest, poet and tutor Liane Strauss gave a confident and animated reading from her latest collective publication, the Art of Wiring as well as her sole collections of Leaving Eden and Frankie, Alfredo.

Following the prize draw and thanks all round, the mingling, aided by a drink or two, continued in the quiet luxury of the private upstairs room.

The Committee would like to thank all those who read and attended and hope to see you at future events.

May Scribblers Event

Hot on the heels of National Poetry Month, the next Scribblers event will be held on Wednesday 2nd May and will feature guest reader, poet, Liane Strauss.

Liane Strauss was born in the borough of Queens, New York, and grew up in northern New Jersey, birthplace of salt water taffy, Dorothy Parker, Stephen Crane and the electric guitar. Her first full-length collection, Leaving Eden, came out with Salt Publishing in November of 2010 preceded by a pamphlet designed and produced by the wonderful Donut Press, Frankie, Alfredo. Liane is the Head (although she prefers Heart, or Soul) of Poetry on the Creative Writing Programme at Birkbeck and is at the moment looking forward to taking part in the Strokestown International Poetry Festival in Ireland in May, her poem “My Last Coyote” having made the shortlist in their competition.

Along with poetry and short fiction extracts, we encourage you also to submit short sections of your play for a ‘performed reading’. It should be noted that readers for your drama piece will need securing prior to the event. If your submission is selected and you need help securing readers the Committee can assist with the advertising – the more notice we have the better!

Would YOU like to read for one of the drama students and voice a character for them? If so the Committee would like to hear from you.

Message to Anthony Joseph

Here follows a message to our guest reader, Anthony Joseph, for the event on 6th March:

Thank You, Anthony

Thank you Anthony for your deeply honest discussion of your poems.  The introduction to each poem showed how important it is for us as aspiring writers to be in touch with our true selves. Your stories of kites, biscuit factories, your father and trips home to Trinidad were inspirational.

We hope in future more readers at Scribblers will tell us about themselves because, as apprentice writers, we will only find a voice if we are honest about who we are.  This requires taking some risk as we peel back the curtain to show our true persona and openly share the reality of our vision and our way of being in the world.  Anthony, your readings did all of this, and signposted how future Scribblers events could be made more personal and informative for all participants.

All of us at The Birkbeck Scribblers appreciate you sharing your evening with us.

6 March Scribblings

The Birkbeck Scribblers moved venue for their second event.  The atmosphere at the Hoop & Grapes was welcoming and the dedicated bar was a positive addition and commented upon by many.  The room was well insulated and gave the event the feel of a private party cocooned from the sounds of the city.

Public transport proved convenient before and afterwards with Farringdon tube station being only a five minute walk away as well as several buses to choose from close by.

The readers, Scott Landers, Eleonora Fusco, Isabel D'Arq, Tarquin Landseer, Rob Stevens and Narayani L Guibarra were from the Higher Certificate courses through to years one and two BA Creative Writing programme.  They gave readings of poetry and short fiction to a room of thirty guests.  The audience was appreciative of the works from first to last.

Ian Dawes compered with a light, persuasive touch which succeeded in securing valuable and constructive written feedback for our readers.  This was perhaps aided by the incentive of an A5 moleskin style journal being offered as a prize for those entering the draw with each feedback form increasing chances of winning.

Our principal speaker and guest, Anthony Joseph, closed the event with poetry from his published books, including his latest anthology,  Rubber Orchestras.  As a seasoned performer, Anthony gave a relaxed and confident reading which was both entertaining and inspirational.

Following this the networking commenced in earnest. Many people continued to enjoy the privacy of the upstairs room and dedicated bar with conversations highlighting publishing house staff and journalists, along with fellow students and friends of readers in attendance.

The Committee would like to thank all those who read and attended and hope to see you at future events.

Inaugural Event - 2 December 2011

For the Want of a Nail
Author, Richard Hamblyn
We almost lost the first Scribblers event for the want of a microphone battery. The equipment, having been tested and retested in advance, cunningly waited for the event to start before going into anaphylactic shock when finding itself reassigned from karaoke to literary endeavours.  Heartfelt thanks to the sound engineer who fixed the microphone and all our contributors on the night who persevered despite competition from the bar upstairs.

Author, Jonathan Kemp
The readings by lecturers, Richard Hamblyn and Jonathan Kemp, and students in an informal setting were met by an enthusiastic reception.

Our compere, Narayani
The evening would never have happened but for Narayani’s compering and the audience of students and staff whose loyal support and encouragement was greatly appreciated.  Lastly, a special thanks to the management of The College Arms who provided the venue free of charge.

The Birkbeck Scribblers runs without funding so depends on the generosity and support of everyone from publicans to publishers to keep it going.
